What does the Clerk’s Office do and how does it affect me?

In brief, the Clerk’s office employs nearly 1,000 people and manages billions of public dollars. It has over 1,000 responsibilities, which directly or indirectly affect every resident of Hillsborough County. These fall into four main categories:

  1. Administrative, accounting and recordkeeping support to our County Court and Circuit Court.

  2. Administrative and recordkeeping support to our county government, the elected Board of County Commissioners.

  3. Financial management of county monies to ensure their proper use. The Clerk serves as Comptroller, Chief Financial Officer, accountant, investor and independent auditor of county expenditures.

  4. Collection, protection and provision of authorized access to public records, including residency, deeds, marriages, divorces, and custody arrangements, in addition to many others.
